Saturday 15th October 2011 saw another fine turnout at WPH Schools’ Cross Country Race meeting. Over 400 athletes from over 30 local schools ran in the club’s annual cross country meeting in Hughenden Park. The superb autumnal weather meant athletes and spectators enjoyed sunshine throughout the morning.
The Wycombe Phoenix Harriers’ athletes were out in force competing for their respective schools. Club members who won their respective races were Kirsten Stilwell (Yr 5 Girls), Cleo Pryor (Yr 6 Girls), Bradley Lawrence (U15 Boys) and Matthew Axe (U17 Boys). Other WPH athletes to medal included Emma Louise Stilwell, Lucie Pryor, Amelia Barclay, Maisie Pennant, Megan Styles, Georgina Russell, Daniel Weathers, Toby Wapshare, Jack Blyth and Kieran Gilfedder.
In the junior school races it was St.Johns who proved to be the top local school for cross country athletes, as they retained the Chris Aperghis Cup for the best junior school finishing teams in all of the junior age groups. St.Johns (205pts) narrowly beat Great Kingshill (216) and Farnham Common (273). Well done St.Johns!
There were many impressive individual and team performances. Individual winners came from The Beacon, Chalfont St.Giles, Sir William Borlase, High Crest, and RGS in the Boys races. While in the Girls section Naphill & Walters Ash, Danesfield, Wycombe High and Wycombe Abbey provided the individual winners. With so many fine performances it is difficult to single out the best. Different schools dominated each age group race.
The day’s first race, the Girls Year 5s, was dominated by the Stilwell sisters, Kirsten and Emma Louise, from Naphill & Walters Ash. Kirsten Stilwell was a clear winner by 30 seconds in 6m 51sec from her sister. Becky Sear in 24th place completed the winning Naphill & Walters Ash team. Something for Year 5 competitors to worry about for next year is that Kirsten is a year 4 and is eligible to defend her title next year!
Just as the Year 5 race was dominated by one school, so Danesfield was the best in the Year 6 race. In a close encounter Cleo Pryor beat her team mate Amelia Barclay by a single second in 10m 03s. Maisie Pennant of Holy Trinity took bronze. Unfortunately the Danesfield school was a third runner short so didn’t figure in the team event. Great Kingshill grabbed the team medals by 3 points from St.Johns.
The under 13s Girls race was close again. Emily Cannon (Wycombe High) won by 5 seconds from Anna Croft (Beaconsfield High) with Megan Styles (Holmer Green) a further 18 seconds back. Wycombe High took the team medals. In the next age group, the under 15s, Wycombe Abbey stamped their authority. Eloise Davison’s winning time of 18m 37s saw her beat team mate Isabel Dye. Amy Hoskins in 5th place help Wycombe Abbey take the team gold. Mary Alice Davison matched her sister’s performance in the Under 17s race. Mary Alice won in 18m 28 from Sophie Street (Wycombe High) and Georgina Russell (Holmer Green). In 4th place was Katie Cannon (Wycombe High) the sister of the under 13s winner. Team prize went to Sir William Borlase, from Great Marlow and Pipers Corner. Maryse Haynes was a convincing winner in the under 18s.
The Boys races were just as close as the Girls races. Chalfont St.Giles’ Harry Brandon won the 1.5km year 5 race in 6m 38s, nine seconds faster than The Beacon’s Angus Creighton. St.Joseph’s Ben Derry took bronze two seconds later. The Beacon team all finished in the top 10 to set up their team win from Chalfont St.Giles and Stokenchurch.
The Beacon gave the most dominant performance of the day in the Year 6 race. The first four finishers were all Beacon athletes. The team was Ben Smith, Monty Weatherhall and James Larard. Spare a thought for Daniel Lilley – the Beacon athlete was fourth in the race and missed out on an individual and a team medal. Sir William Borlase had their first winner of the day in Matt Casale in the Under 13s. Matt was closely followed home by John Fothergill (Great Marlow) and David Weston (Wye Valley). Matt also picked up a team medal as a member of the winning Sir William Borlase team. Great Marlow took silver and The Beacon bronze. High Crest entered a single athlete, Bradley Lawrence, and he ran a fine race to narrowly beat Toby Wapshare (Great Marlow). Matt won by 5 seconds in 16m 39s. Jack Blyth (SWB) clinched the bronze and had the satisfaction of leading home the winning Sir William Borlase team. Second in the team was Chalfont Community College with Great Marlow close behind.
The Under 17 race saw Matthew Axe as the clear winner in 21m 41s from WPH club mate Keiran Gilfedder (John Hampden). RGS took team gold. The under18 winner was Alex Goodall (RGS) who repeated his win from the previous year.
A fantastic morning of races run in glorious sunshine. Hard to believe that the mud, rain and snow is only a few weeks away!

Congratulations to Harry Sutherland.
Harry has been selected to represent England in the Schools International Pentathalon in December.
Mateusz Sliwinski, Ben Sutherland and Matt Axe win the South of England Cross Country Relay Championships held in Biggleswade last Saturday 1st October 2011.
Mateusz ran the 1st leg with a time of 10.17 which put WPH in 8th place, Ben took the team to 3rd place with running his leg in 9.57; Matthew then took the team into the Gold position with a time of 10.11, this put our team a fantastic 27 seconds ahead of the field!
