Bucks and Beds Cross Country Championships January 2019

Monday, November 19th, 2018

WPH is hosting this event – your help is needed

What’s this all about?

This is the annual Buckinghamshire County Cross Country Championships for athletes from U13s up to Senior. It’s where County Titles are won.

It’s taking place at Hughenden Park on Saturday 5th January 2019.

WPH is helping the County put on this event. To do this, the club needs volunteers to help set up, marshal the course and keep an eye on the cars.

I’d love to help. How do I do that?

Before Monday 17th December, please have a look at the 9 roles needed in the table here, decide which you can help with, then send the following details to Sally Delgado at volunteers@wycombephoenix.org or simply hand the form on this link to Sally on a Club night.

The details that Sally needs are:

Your name
Email
Mobile
If you will have an athlete competing: Name of athlete, Gender, Age group
Role or roles you would be happy to help with (see list below)
Any time restrictions or other information

I’m worried that I don’t have the skills or experience

Athletics is a sport that prides itself on supporting its volunteers. We aim to support you throughout your experience: sending information before, being there to answer questions and keeping in touch throughout the event. We are used to working with parents / athletes who are new to the sport.

Please do contact / talk to Sally if you want to know more or to just talk things over.

The Help that’s Needed – the Roles

All of the roles listed at this link are essential to the running of the event. The Judges who will make decisions about the races will be supplied separately through the County.

Why is WPH doing this?

The Bucks County Athletic Association (AA) the controlling authority for athletics in Buckinghamshire. The AA has a committee that oversees the structure, competition dates and liaises with the sport’s governing bodies but it is a voluntary organisation that puts on events for the county athletes, through the clubs and officials in the county.

To improve the standard of competition and reduce the burden on clubs, Bucks AA have, for a number of years, joined with Bedfordshire to run a joint county cross country championships. This means that Bucks hosts the championships every other year. Within the County, this alternates between the north of the County (Milton Keynes usually) and the South of the County (Hughenden).

The last time the championships was hosted at Hughenden was in 2015, and WPH supplied a lot of the infrastructure and some of the volunteers as the main club in the area. We need to do this again. Without this input, the Championships can’t happen and there will be no County Cross Country Champions this year.

From the Championships the Bucks AA are able to select teams for prestigious National Events and Inter-County matches, giving our young athletes the level of competition and experience they would not otherwise have.

2018 WPH Schools’ Cross County Races Cancelled

Tuesday, September 25th, 2018

2018 WPH Schools’ Cross County Races Cancelled – Sat 6th October 2018

Unfortunately we have had to take the difficult decision to cancel this year’s Schools Cross County Event.

We realise that this will be a disappointment to those athletes who have already entered, as it is to our Club, however there are a number of factors that have led to this decision.

It is heartening that so many of the potential competitors will be taking part in the Schools Cup that has, at a late date, been scheduled the day before our event and also in the local schools league match on the same day; WPH started the Schools Cross Country event over fifteen years ago to give local school children a chance to take part in cross country races and gain experience in competing. However, having races so close together is not good for the athletes.

There have also been a number of new logistical challenges emerging this year that, while they can be solved individually, together will impact the safety and enjoyment of the event.

We wish you all the best in your sporting endeavours for the rest of the season.

2017 WPH Schools’ Cross Country Races

Tuesday, July 4th, 2017

2017 WPH Schools’ Cross County Races – Sat 7th October 2017

On Saturday 7th October 2017 Wycombe Phoenix Harriers hosts its 14th annual cross country races for schools in the Wycombe area. Once again, the venue is Hughenden Park very close to High Wycombe town centre.

Races are for junior and senior school athletes.  The junior school races are for years 5 and 6 pupils, boys and girls.  The senior schools races are for all school years, boys and girls.  Entry is free and schools may enter as many pupils as they wish, though, typically, the first three from each school count in the team event. Please note that due to the high number of entries expected in the junior school races, we are imposing a closing date for junior school entries. This year, the closing date for entries is Friday 29th September 2017.

Hughenden Park is a superb and popular venue for cross country races and regularly hosts championship events. The courses are a mix of parkland, hills and possibly some water!  Viewing for spectators is superb!

For more details and an entry form for the October 2017 races please click onto the links on this page.  The links include the email inviting schools to participate, the entry form, the provisional race timetable and a map of the courses. Race results will also be added soon after the event. Schools entering athletes will receive an e-mail confirming their entry, race start times and general administration points including parking arrangements.
