ARE YOU OR YOUR CHILD LOOKING TO TRAIN IN ATHLETICS AND TO JOIN A FRIENDLY LOCAL CLUB?

Junior Athletes

If you are looking to join our junior squads – athletes aged 8+ (U11s, U13s) – our next induction intake is likely to be around Spring 2018.

Available spaces will be dependant on movements of athletes in existing squads as most of our junior training groups are now full. The club however no longer hold any waiting lists. Please check this page early next year to sign-up and attend our next available induction date(s) as this will be published here.

Meanwhile, if you have any questions about our club or would like to come and visit us, feel free to contact us via email and we will try and get back to as soon as we can. Send your enquiry to:   enquiries@wycombephoenix.org

Clarification of our induction process (for our Junior squads)

  1. Sign up to attend an induction date (Select the date you can attend).
  2. Provide the following details when signing up – athlete’s full name, DOB, athletics experience and the area of athletics you are interested to train in, your email and telephone number or your parent’s email and contact number for under 16s).

Frequently Asked Questions and Answers

Saturday, April 8th, 2017

Where do you train?

Wycombe District Athletics Complex, Marlow Road, Little Marlow, Bucks. SL7 3RQ (just off the A404, 1st right after Marlow Garden Centre)

When do you train?

Training location varies depending on the squad you train with and changes depending on whether it is Winter or Summer Training schedule.

For example: during the summer training months (generally from March/April until September/October), several of our groups train at the track in Little Marlow on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7.00-8.30pm and on Sunday mornings between 9.00-12.00 noon.   Moving into winter  training (the remainder of the year), some squads will swap Sunday morning training over to Saturday morning instead.  Additionally, Thursday evening training may either be at a local Gym or open Park as opposed to being at the track.

Note that Younger athletes (primary age children in our FUNdametals Squad) normally train only once per week and this increases with age and experience as directed by their coach.

When can I join and what is the procedure?

WPH are actively looking to recruit new members into many of our Event Group squads – athletes aged 14+ (including adults). All abilities are welcome to train with us. If you are looking to join a local, friendly club and are interested in athletics training and competing in track & field and cross country events, we would love to hear from you.

Our junior section is currently full (from Years 3 to 8, age 8+ to 13). We hope that we will have spaces available in Spring 2018. Dates for the next Induction Meeting will be published on our website when training spaces become available. As we do not hold a waiting list, please check our website for published dates.  To join us, you will need to  sign up to attend one of our planned induction meeting  dates. Following the induction you will be able to attend our free ‘taster sessions’. Unfortunately, we do not take in new junior athletes outside of our induction group dates.

Our next induction group intake will be in Spring 2018. The Induction Meeting  is held at Little Marlow Track on a Tuesday  evening. (Date to be published soon).  Once a date is publish, please email Mike Taylor (our New Enquiries Secretary): enquiries@wycombephoenix.org  in order to sign up and attend our upcoming induction group intake meeting.

For all athletes aged 8 to under 17 years:

Any young athletes wishing to join must attend the Induction Meeting evening together with their parent or guardian.
After attending the induction meeting, athletes are invited to attend ‘taster training sessions’ (free of charge) over the following three weeks immediately after the Induction Meeting. These taster sessions will hopefully give you an idea of what it is like to train with us. We strongly encourage all attendees to attend all the free training sessions so as to give you a balanced view of what it is like to train with us. After these taster sessions, you will need to make a decision and inform us as to  whether you would like to take up membership with the club. Our membership fees is an annual up-front charge, due in full on joining the club and is non-refundable.

NB: We expect the following on joining the club:

Regular attendance at training
Willingness and availability to compete for the Club
Good behaviour and enthusiasm
Parents or guardians volunteering to help at the Club (whenever possible). Note that our club is run entirely by volunteers.

For Athletes aged 18 years and over:

If you are interested in finding more about joining one of  our squads (e.g. middle distance, pole vault, throws, road running or sprints), please email Mike Taylor (our New Enquiries Secretary): enquiries@wycombephoenix.org  for more details. We may be able to place you in one of our squads immediately  although you will still need to attend an induction meeting at a later date.
Please contact us for more information. We would love to hear from you.

Please Note: It is our policy for all new athletes to the club, to attend the planned induction evening date that is immediately prior to joining us for training in the free training sessions that follow the induction meeting. Attendance at a previous Induction Evening (e.g. a couple of months ago or prior year) does not mean you can join us for training at subsequent taster sessions as information provided at previous meetings may have changed during that time.

What are the Membership Fees?

WPH’s Athlete Membership year runs from 1st April to 30 March each year with effect from 2017-2018 membership year.

Club Membership fee is  an annual charge that is due in full on joining or on membership renewal (non-refundable).  Full fees are to be paid up front and not in arrears;  new members joining part-way through the membership year will pay pro-rata fees depending on the month you join. (NB: For your information, over the last few years – e.g. 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17 – WPH’s Annual Standard Membership fee was set at: £273.60 per athlete for all squads (excluding the Adults Social Road Running Group).

In previous years, WPH used to offer two payment options for paying membership fees. However, the option to spread fees evenly  over the year through monthly standing order payments, is no longer  available (effective from 1st February 2017)  as our membership fees have been significantly reduced in order to benefit all members.

No. The club pays for the hire of the track facility at Little Marlow. Our bookings are for specific times relating to club training sessions only. Therefore, WPH Members may only use this facility when the club has a valid booking and is training there.  Please do not attempt to use the track outside of club training sessions as this would be considered trespassing.

If you wish to use the track or field facilities outside of  club training times, please enquire directly with ALF (who manages the track on behalf of Wycombe District Council) for their usage charge and to make your own booking to use the track or field facilities.
They can be contacted on www.alfvillages.org.uk/alfletics/

We are also particularly interested in hearing from athletes with experience of pole vaulting or who are keen to give this sport a try.

See more FAQs (below) relating to our POLE VAULTING squad.

What qualifications do your coaches have?

As part of our status as a holder of Clubmark (a quality club accreditation awarded by England Athletics), all our lead coaches are licensed by UKA to Club Coach, Level 2 or higher. In addition, all assistant coaches are qualified to Level 1 (Assistant Coach) from UKA. Finally, all coaches, club officers and regular helpers are required to hold a current Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate (formerly known as CRB).

What options do you have for Under 11s?

We run a large squad for U11s where the emphasis is on developing all the fundamentals of athletics including running, throwing and jumping.  Although U11s are not permitted to compete in the main track and field league meetings, our Club Championships makes provision for this age group and athletes are also strongly encouraged to participate in the Chiltern League (cross country races) over the winter training season. All U11s (aged 9+) should speak to their coach about off-track training during the winter weekends (winter season training schedule).

Can I volunteer and help at the club?

Yes, WPH is a community club and is run solely by volunteers. We are always looking for volunteers of all ages to come and join our friendly volunteers team. You do not need to have a registered athlete at the club in order to volunteer with us. Training is provided and we try to work with your availability. All volunteers will need to registered with the club and complete the usual identity checks expected for the role taken. Whether you are:

  • interested in helping us at events held throughout the year ( e.g. with marshalling, serving refreshments, manning the car park, officiating, first aid etc) or
  • helping our coaches with their squad at training sessions or
  • looking to gain experience in coaching or officiating at events or
  • would like to follow a specific England Athletics volunteers pathways (see link), aiming to qualify as a coach or as an athletics official so as to support our club and officiate at various matches or club run events or
  • help the club with various administrative roles such as: updating our website regularly, managing our Club’s Kit Store orders, managing bookings, fundraising and many more. Please tell us how you can help us.

We would love to hear form you. Please email us to find out more about volunteering at the club.

How do I get into Pole Vault?

Wycombe Phoenix Harriers has highly skilled Pole Vault Coaches with a track record of coaching athletes at National Level. But everyone has to start somewhere, beginners start with low grips jumping into a sandpit about 10 cm off the ground. As the athletes skills develop, they start jumping for height onto foam landing areas. Once the athletes starts to master the event, they are then taught to bend the pole and progress to a technique similar to elite athletes. Look out for our beginner / taster sessions to give pole vault a go.

Why does the Pole Vault Squad mainly train at Brunel University?

Pole Vault requires a lot of safety equipment to be set up each session and is very susceptible to bad weather. Brunel University, Uxbridge, has a fantastic indoor athletics facility with a dedicated, permanently established Pole Vault area, incorporating specialist training equipment. Training sessions are planned to utilise the facilities fully, incorporating technical drills, gymnastics, conditioning and speed development. Utilising this facility enables training to be undertaken throughout the winter without having to worry about rain, low temperatures or strong winds.
