Become an Official: support our athletes and earn points for the club
Every club needs to take a team of people to a league match so that it can happen. They could be sitting in the stand with a stop watch, checking relay changeovers or measuring a long jump.
You’ll be there anyway and asked to help, so why not earn more points and become a qualified official?
Here’s a personal view from Sally, one of our volunteer officials (opens in Facebook).
There are four main disciplines:
- Field – level the sand for the long jump, measure a discus throw etc
- Timekeeping – we’re reliably informed that this is the best seat in the house for races
- Track – who won? Did the relay baton make it round?
- Starter / Starter’s Assistant – make an entrance with a bang
If you’re interested in officiating have a look at the England Athletics website, or have a chat with Sally Delgado (Club Officials Administrator) on a Tuesday training night or at officialsadmin@wycombephoenix.org.
It’s a simple process involving a course in the discipline (online or face to face), some experience and a couple of online tutorials. You’ll need a DBS but that’s all made simple by England Athletics.
Details of officials courses can be found here.
