Wycombe Phoenix Harriers took three athletes to the prestigious National English Schools championships at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham last weekend. Emily Sanderson in the Junior Girls long jump, Emily Smith in the Senior Girls 400m hurdles and Kirsten Stilwell in the Junior Girls 1500m.

KS ESAAIn her first English Schools competition Sanderson jumped 4:90 placing her 14th in a large high quality field. In the 400m hurdles Smith finished 4th in her heat, not quite enough to make the final. This was her final English Schools competition before heading off to University.

The stand out performance of the weekend went to Kirsten who cruised through her 1500m heat on Friday and dominated Saturday’s final to be crowned English Schools Champion. Kirsten proved her class by controlling the majority of the race from the front against top quality opposition. Her time of 4:31.85 was a personal best and cemented her place as one of the fastest in the country this year. The time also meant she beat the clubs record for the event, which has been unbroken since 1971!
