SW Race Report SEAA 3 X 3k XC Relays – Wormwood Scrubs (19th Oct 2019)

Matt reminded me that Two years ago at this event Wycombe Phoenix had three SW running (Lucy, Laura and Jess). They finished 9th. This was the first time the club had ever finished a senior women’s team in a Championship. Last year five ladies ran (myself, Alex, Pippa, Jenny and Beth) We finished first. This year eight ladies ran. We had three teams and we finished first again and 12th. I hope we can continue the Clubs growth and success for many years to come.

The Southern cross country relays are a great XC event. The course is flat and short it is a great early season XC. It tends to naturally attract track runners. Relays are always great fun. We had three Ladies teams out on Saturday but one was unfortunately incomplete. It was a good opportunity to get a run out for those who were not at the first Chiltern league.

On leg one we had myself, Laura and Nicki. The start is up hill but it is always fast. We all went off hard. Nicki having not raced and done very little proper training still managed a 5.54 first mile. Laura ran a very well paced race and kept me in sight until we got to the wooded section. I found myself at the front with another two girls from the gun. The course twists and turns and the grass is rutted and hard to run on in places. I stayed near the front but waited until we turned back on the straight to go home to push on taking the lead. I then increased my pace in the muddy wooded section leaving another 800m around the field with the uphill finish. I felt strong and tried to increase the lead to give Alex a good gap to Clapham Chasers in second place. I finished first in 11.48 on leg one with a 14 second lead and second overall fastest of the day. Laura ran an excellent race for the B team finishing an overall 21st fastest of the day. Well done to Laura a fantastic performance. Nicki then followed with an awesome start to her season finishing an overall 37th fastest and 5th fastest for Wycombe. We really hope we can get Nicki to compete in the rest of the Chiltern leagues and come to the odd training session with us.

On leg two we had Alex, Mel P and Karen. Alex did not enjoy being chased by Emma Headley of Clapham Chasers. Who would finish in 11.51 and third overall fastest. Alex was not going to give up the lead and increased the gap on the last uphill to the finish. Finishing first on leg 2 and fourth overall fastest of the day in at time of 11.54. Mel P had a brilliant run Finishing in 13.24, 39th fastest. She left it all out there as did Hannah. Karen also very new to club running and racing and still learning had a very good hard run out. She finished in 14.45 and 80th fastest out of 125 runners.

Just to make it harder for the third leg runners it started to rain. On leg three we had Mel W who took the last leg with a lead of 11 seconds and increased this to a 40 second lead with the fastest leg of the day in 11.28. She was being chased by a good runner from Clapham Chasers, Lucie Custance who finished in 11.54. We had Hannah for the B team who put in another awesome performance, after her Chiltern Debut last weekend, to finish our B team in 12th and in a time of 13.41 and 57th fastest overall. All the ladies are only going to improve with more experience, more training and racing.

It was a fantastic day for all the Ladies. Well done Team 👏🏻🙌🏻
