SEAA Cross Country Relay Championship – Wormwood Scrubs (23rd October 2021)

We have won this event in 2018 and 2019. We definitely had a medal worthy team but could we win again?

On the start line I spotted three girls from Track. The 3x3K flat start of the season XC event is a favourite of mine and many track girls. I felt as confident as I could but unfortunately I had to have a week off running last week, with a shin splint and then this week I went deaf in one ear.
A girl from London Heathside went straight to the front and two of the track girls from Thames Valley and Southampton followed. I was behind the next group Chiltern, Herne Hill and Belgrave. My last 1K was fast and I got back to them over-taking Herne Hill then Belgrave before the line but Chiltern just over-taking me to the line. We were in 5th position going into leg two. My performance was not what I wanted but I was sure we could get back into the medals.
Laura who is going very well quickly got us back into third position and then with 500m to go she stormed past Thames Valley to put us in silver medal position. A fantastic run by Laura.
London Heathside’s first leg had ran so fast she would be the second fastest of the day and this had given them a 200m lead for the third leg runner.
If anyone could close the gap it would be Pippa. At 800m to go I saw them coming and Pippa was closing the gap of less than 10 metres now. Pippa took the lead around 500m to go and kept building the lead to the line. She had no idea she had won. She declined an interview to go straight into doing some extra reps.
I wished I had given us a better start but then I was also happy to see Pippa have a good workout out of it.
Laura super mum brought the kids to cheer us and with cakes and tea. We met Pippa and Rich’s adorable new puppy. All in all it was a lovely and successful day out. We have won three times in a row how long can we keep this title?
The course was slightly different, the competition and the condition’s so we can’t compare teams but we can be so very proud of this achievement for all our Ladies Team and for our club.

2018 – Zoë Doyle, Alex Cook, Pippa Woolven

2019 – Zoë Doyle, Alex Cook, Mel Wilkins
